Not a fan of crime procedural dramas, as I turn to kdramas for fluff, squees, and heart, but the raving buzz around Signal is too irresistible to resist. Signal is basically a superhero show that does not gloss over the gritty reality of injustices of this thing called life. We can’t resist young kactors who are too pretty for their own good, but Jo Jin Woong shone in this drama as Lee Jae Han, wearing his Superman cape one impossible case at a time. On another drama Lee Je Hoon with his youthful good looks might have been cast as detective superhero extraordinaire Lee Jae Han, but Signal has the guts to cast an older actor in this role. Kim Hye Soo showed her amazing range as an innocent young Cha Soo Hyun in the past, and a more hardened veteran detective in the present times. I find Lee Je Hoon overacting at times, but he never fails to give an entertaining and committed performance. Kim Won Hae as sidekick detective Kim Gye Chul is my 2nd fave character next to Lee Jae Han. He might always be grumpy, and almost one tumble away from being a bad apple himself, but at the last minute pulls through and sides with the good guys for the big fight. There is not one weak actor in this drama. I cannot count how many times I wanted to strangle evil Kim Bum Joo, or cry with the young Park Hae Young. The drama stressed me out, kudos to this director-writer tandem that kept me at the edge of my seat.Ĭrime procedural time jump drama? It already gives me a headache based on description alone. But the drama was not confusing at all and the connection of the cases were well depicted. It took me some time to get used to the artistic choices the director had for the discoloration, and blurry quality of scenes of the past. But I guess they’re trying to pull off a crime noir look for the drama. The earlier cases definitely are more heart thumping than that last big case.

That last case is more of tying up the loose ends and putting everything in full circle. Some of the cases are really sad, depressing, and are just too close to grim reality. Like the case wherein the good guys tried their hardest to change things for the better, but the ending remains tragically the same. It might not have been comfortable watching Signal because of its harsh depictions of life, but I’ll forever be grateful for the beacon of light embodied in Lee Jae Han who plants doubt in my jaded mind that justice system in our world is full of rotten apples. There could still be a good one buried under there struggling through the filth. With the internet and technology, common people also have more means now to share their voice. We shouldn’t simply conform and follow the atrocious system of bribery and corruption in our society. As per Signal, let’s not give up on hope. signal kdrama korean drama jo jin woong kim hye soo lee je hoon kim won hae final review reviewīlack is a good grim reaper crime drama! At first, I was put off in the first ep by that (too long) slapstick hospital gown scene of Song Seung Heon (Black), and Go Ara’s (Haram) hysterical plane scene. (Warning, this drama contain triggering content like rape, suicide, and child prostitution, among others.) But after that things picked up, and it became a substantial riveting watch. Writer Choi Ran presents you this big puzzle, giving bits of clues here and there, slowly letting you earn and piece together a few at a time, and get a clearer picture with each episode. Even that early standalone episode about the 2 kids, ugh, I’m still bothered and outraged by it. If I have one hangup, she goes overboard with her twists, it’s one too many for me. Twists keep things exciting but should still be reasonable within the story. I was also initially misled by misconceptions about Song Seung Heon and Go Ara’s acting. Yes, SSH may struggle a bit with melo scenes, and Go Ara can go overboard at times, but SSH really suited Black, he is the classic k-hero we love with a supernatural twist and oozing with charm. Black is that standoffish, arrogant, unfeeling Reaper 444, just collecting the souls of humans who just tragically died, without any pity at all. It was such a delight to see his cold heart gradually melt, and it’s not only because of Haram, that turning point when he saw the heartless way the husband and wife (who lost their kid in Mujin Mall collapse) were killed. He tried to keep distant but cannot stay as casual observer anymore. SSH also has good comedic chops, it was a hoot to watch Black trying to resist his growing empathy, and even falling for a measly human he used to look down on.
